In 1925, John J. Sullivan gave birth to J.J. Sullivan Fuel Oil Company with little more than 5 gallons cans of oil and kerosene, one truck and a small garage. From this humble beginning, J.J. Sullivan has grown into a major provider of fuel oil services and sales to shoreline residences from Branford to Clinton.

En route to the comprehensive company it is today, we have experienced a number of transitions. J.J. Sullivan grew from a gas station to a provider of range oil to a fuel oil company. Originally located on Boston Post Road, we moved to River Street. J.J. Sullivan enjoyed further growth when we joined forces with Sheehan Oil in 1963 and then Knowles-Lombard in 1988. The ownership and management of the company passed from founder, John J. Sullivan to his sons, John F. and Tom Sullivan. Today, responsibility for the continued successful operation of the company lies with grandsons, John J., Paul and Jim Sullivan. As the business grew, so did the Sullivan family commitment to be an active part of the Guilford community with many contributions to local charities.
In our 80th-year, J.J. Sullivan remains a family owned business, combining traditional family values of service excellence with 21st Century efficiency and technology. With a staff of 14 employees and a fleet of trucks, we stand ready to deliver the following services:

Furnace and Boiler Installation & Servicing

We are proud to install state of the art furnaces and boilers as described in our "Products" section.

Heat from a furnace is distributed throughout the home in one of three ways:

Hot Water (baseboard or radiant heat)
Steam (radiators)
Warm Air (vents)
J. J. Sullivan oil technicians are able to install and service whichever system meets your house's requirements.

Servicing an oil furnace should be an annual activity. We offer a choice of service contracts.

Heating System Tune Ups

The heating system tune up is part of the annual service contract. Our experienced, reliable technicians check and clean out all parts of the system to ensure that each part is working as it should. Tune ups can be scheduled all year round. We recommend that you call for an appointment. Tune ups are guaranteed for one year.

A tune up consists of the "Top Ten" check up system which includes:
Change nozzle and flush fuel line.
Check primary control and safety timing.
Clean or change oil filter.
Oil and check burner fan, fan motor, shaft bearings, adjust drive belt if necessary.
Check smoke pipe and chimney base.
Check air filters and replace if necessary.
Check fuel pump, clean strainer, check pump pressure, check bellows, if applicable.
Check and inspect transformer voltage.
Check and clean firing assembly.
Check furnace e draft for proper operation.
In addition, during a tune up, our technicians will:

Test and adjust the oil burner for maximum efficiency, using Bacharach testing equipment.
Inspect the combustion chamber.
Check oil tank and lines, where accessible.
